The Covenant God
Read the full study:
The word covenant appears throughout the Bible, but it can be easy to read past it without understanding its significance.
The word "testement" means covenant. 💭
God made different covenants throughout Scripture—with Noah, Abraham, Israel, David, and ultimately we see the New Covenant through Jesus Christ. These covenants were not all the same, but together they reveal God’s faithfulness, His promises, and His plan of redemption.
Marriage is also described in Scripture as a covenant.
“…yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.”Malachi 2:14 KJV
And this is where the subject becomes especially important for believers.
Marriage Points Us Toward Something Greater
The Bible begins with a marriage. God creates the woman, brings her to Adam, and establishes the one-flesh union:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 KJV
But when Paul later speaks about this same passage, he reveals something that was there all along:
“This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” Ephesians 5:32 KJV
Marriage is real, and the covenant between husband and wife is real. But Scripture also uses this relationship to reveal something greater: Christ and His church.
That gives us the lens for this study.
We will follow covenant through Scripture and consider what marriage, faithfulness, oneness, the Bridegroom, and the bride teach us about our relationship with Jesus Christ.
A Question to Consider Before You Begin
Covenant is more than knowing about God. It brings us face-to-face with commitment, relationship, faithfulness, belonging, surrender, and God's divine love.
So as you read, consider:
What does it mean to belong to Jesus Christ in covenant relationship—and does my life reflect that I belong to Him?
