Mustard Seed Faith: Learning to Slow Down and Understand Scripture

“Faith as a grain of mustard seed” is a familiar phrase—but have we slowed down enough to understand why Jesus chose a mustard seed?

The purpose of this interactive study is not only to examine mustard seed faith, but to practice how we approach Scripture: slowing down, observing, comparing passages, considering context, reflecting, and digesting what God has said.

Jesus often taught through parables, comparisons, and familiar things from everyday life. Rather than rushing to an interpretation, this study encourages us to stop and ask: What is Jesus actually showing us?

What to Expect

Using Matthew 17:20 alongside the other mustard-seed passages, you’ll practice:

  • comparing Scripture with Scripture;

  • examining context and Jesus’ comparisons;

  • asking questions before jumping to conclusions;

  • working through comprehension and reflection prompts;

  • and applying what you’ve understood to your own faith.

The goal is not simply to finish another lesson. It is to practice taking time with God’s Word until we understand what we are reading and can respond to it.
