The Parable of the Talents

What Is This Message About?

Jesus taught His disciples that His servants are entrusted with what belongs to Him and will one day give an account for how they handled what they were given.

This study examines two closely related teachings of Jesus: the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14–30 and the Parable of the Pounds in Luke 19:11–27. Together, they direct our attention toward stewardship, faithfulness, accountability, the Kingdom of God, and the return of the King.

The question is not simply, What has God given me?

It is also:

What am I doing with what He has entrusted to me?

What Can You Expect?

This study walks through the servants in these parables and considers the different ways they responded to their master.

You will examine what Scripture says about being faithful with what belongs to God, the coming accounting of His servants, practical stewardship, seeking first the Kingdom of God, and the serious contrast between the faithful and unfaithful servant.

Throughout the study, you’ll also find contextual review questions, comprehension exercises, personal reflection, and journaling space designed to send you back into the Scriptures rather than simply give you conclusions.

Why Is This Important?

Everything we possess ultimately belongs to God. Our time, resources, abilities, opportunities, and possessions are things we are called to handle with an awareness that the Lord is King and we are His servants.

The Parable of the Talents is therefore much bigger than a lesson about money.

It causes us to examine faithfulness.

Are we using what the Lord has entrusted to us according to His purposes? Are we seeking His Kingdom first?

Are we faithfully serving while awaiting the return of our Lord?

Jesus’ words call His servants to live with the reality that the Master will return.
